“When I was using 'paid for' advertising (Google Adwords) to promote the website I had a lot of response and made many sales, however it was costing a lot of money. I could not continue with that forever as Google was taking a large chunk of my monthly turnover.

Being a very specialised business I don't have Mass appeal.

I was prepared to fund the “pay per click” short term, only in order to quickly establish the site. The website was developed a many years ago and was coded with tables rather than modern compliant css techniques.

DesignWeb recommended updating the website so that it was coded in valid xhtml and css and also to include some Search Engine Optimisation techniques to aid with my natural listings. The site is now viewable across all of the various browsers on both Apple Mac and PC, which can only aid with the exposure of my products.

The investment in going for the natural listings was exactly the right thing to do as I am now listed with Google (over 900 pages indexed) without a significant cost to my business. I am now saving about £500 per month, as I have stopped my Google Adwords account and orders have remained at the same level as before.

Since the website was optimised I have also gained:-

  • 1,951 pages indexed by MSN
  • 137 pages indexed by Yahoo, Altavista and Alltheweb
I still have an Overture account, which I find aids with exposure in other directories and smaller search engines. This is not expensive and I believe it to be good value for money, as I know I get results and I see my site listed all over the internet.

I have developed a repeat customer base who come to me directly, but it is good to know that the search engines have my website fully indexed and appearing on many key and relevant searches for my products and services.

The next stage for the site is to continue to add to the page content and to increase its popularity through link building.”
